With the support of SETA, Mahogany Brooks has transformed her life through determination, support, and hands-on training. Her story is a powerful example of how access to the right resources and guidance can open doors to a fulfilling and stable career.
A New Beginning
In early 2024, Mahogany began her journey with the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Out of School Youth Program through the La Familia Counseling Center. At the time, she was facing the challenges of an unexpected pregnancy, with her due date set for January 2025. Despite these personal hurdles, Mahogany remained focused on building a better future for herself and her child.
Through the program, she gained valuable experience in office administration as part of a paid work experience placement, providing her with income, but also the foundational workplace skills and confidence.
Discovering a Career Path
Due to Mahogany’s experience with the WIOA Youth Program, she was offered a position to serve on the SETA Youth Voice Team, where she worked as a Youth Voice-Advocate. While in this role, she was introduced to the broader services offered at local America’s Job Centers of California (AJCCs), enhancing her awareness of programs focused on underserved communities. It was during this time that Mahogany expressed a strong interest in pursuing a career in the medical field and began working with her coach to research training opportunities. Mahagony joined the HRTP – Public Sector Pathways program, which allowed her to enroll in a Medical Assisting program that included Earn & Learn, as well as access to the resources and mentorship needed to succeed.
Training, Growth, and Transformation
Mahogany thrived in the program and stated, “work-based learning training was instrumental in helping me to apply classroom knowledge directly to real-world situations during the externship placement.”
As she neared the end of her training in November 2024, SETA and La Familia staff worked closely with her to coordinate the next steps, including securing a job placement.
Mahogany completed her training at Capital Nephrology Medical Group, where she impressed her supervisors and was offered a permanent position as a Medical Assistant.
Overcoming Barriers and a Bright Future
Before joining the program, Mahogany described herself as shy and reserved. Her early work experience in office administration required minimal public interaction. However, her role in Youth Voice challenged her to step out of her comfort zone and engage directly with the public. This growth continued during her training and externship, where she developed strong communication skills and confidence in patient care.
In January of 2025, she graduated with a degree in Medical Assisting and soon after gave birth to her beautiful baby girl. While currently on maternity leave, she is set to start her job with Capital Nephrology in August 2025.
Mahogany reflected on her journey, sharing the initial uncertainty she felt about finding her first job and how to develop a career path. With the support she received along the way, she gained the confidence to make informed decisions, which led to many accomplishments. She is proud now to have her own apartment, a new job, and is optimistic about her future.
