Through SETA’s Prison to Employment (P2E) program, in partnership with Caltrans, Manuel Rangel was able to transform his life and career path. Prior to entering the program, Manuel was working a minimum wage job and supporting his family while trying to make ends meet. When he first received information about the opportunity to attend training, he was unsure how he could step away from work without jeopardizing his family’s stability. Despite these concerns, he chose to take a chance on the program.
With SETA funding and support, Manuel enrolled in 160 Driving Academy. While he was in school, SETA also provided financial assistance to help him cover essential bills, easing the financial pressure so he could stay focused on his training. This added support helped him remain stable throughout the program and complete his coursework successfully.
After graduating, Manuel transitioned into a new career as a truck driver with Western Express. Since entering the field, he has experienced a significant increase in wages approximately 40%, allowing him to better support his family.
Manuel describes his journey as life-changing, noting that he never imagined having the opportunity to travel across the United States as part of his work. What once felt out of reach has now become his reality, shifting him from a job to a long-term career path.
“If there’s ever a chance offered to you, take it,” Manuel says.
