About the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG)

CSBG provides a range of services to assist low-income people in attaining the skills, knowledge, and motivation necessary to achieve self-sufficiency. The program also provides low-income people with immediate life necessities such as food, shelter, and transportation.

Services provided with CSBG contribute to the achievement of one or more of six national goals:

(1)  Low-income people become more self-sufficient;  (2)  The conditions in which low-income people live are improved;  (3)  Low-income people own a stake in their community;  (4)  Partnerships among supporters and providers of services to low-income people are achieved;  (5)  Agencies increase their capacity to achieve results;  (6)  Low-income people achieve their potential by strengthening family and other supportive systems.

In Sacramento County, programs funded through CSBG strive to eliminate the conditions of poverty affecting the county's low income residents. They include case management, emergency shelter, transportation, emergency food vouchers, and counseling services for at-risk youth, frail elderly, disabled persons, low-income families, and the homeless. Only Sacramento County residents that meet the federal poverty income guidelines or are recipients of TANF or SSI are eligible for CSBG services.
